About
Tin Pang is an award-winning film and television director, known for crafting diverse stories that reflect contemporary Australia, informed by his experiences growing up as an Asian-Australian. With works ranging from irreverent comedy to intimate drama, he has a strong focus on performance and the portrayal of unique characters.
Tin studied at the Griffith Film School at the Queensland College of Art in Brisbane, before completing the industry renowned USC/Universal Producing and Directing intensive program at the University of Southern California in 2008. His first foray into the film industry was on US series including Smallville and Fringe before returning to Australia to work on TVC’s and long form series. A brief scenic tour into the world of animation saw him working in script development at animation studio Flying Bark, along with stints in voice direction and acting on projects including Tashi (ABC Kids), Blinky Bill The Movie, Maya The Bee and 100% Wolf Season 2 (ABC Kids). Tin also worked as a Development Associate Producer at Flying Bark.
His first short film, The Pale Moonlight, explored morals and sacrifice in a pandemic-stricken world, steeped in a dystopian neo-noir aesthetic. It enjoyed a world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in 2014. His breakout short film, Mother, Child, exploring the trauma experienced by stroke survivors and their carers, premiered in the acclaimed Accelerator Lab program for emerging talent at the 65th Melbourne International Film Festival in 2017. The film screened at Flickerfest, St Kilda Film Festival, HollyShorts, World-Fest Houston, Coronado Island Film Festival, and the Legacy Film Festival on Aging in San Francisco. The film would go on to win Best Short Fiction (50 mins or less) at the 2017 ATOM Awards in Melbourne and a Silver Remi at World-Fest Houston.
In 2018, Tin completed a Director's Attachment with director Catherine Millar on A Place To Call Home (Foxtel). He joined TV kids drama The Takeaway Kids at Beyond Productions as development director, taking part in a writer’s room in conjunction with ABC in early 2021.
In late 2021, Tin was chosen to direct Radical Honesty, a proof of concept comedy short written by Neilesh Verma and Suren Jayemanne. The project was one of five taking part in the Equity Foundation’s Screen Diversity Showcase 2021, with major support from Screen Australia, and partners at the Australian Directors’ Guild and the Australian Writers’ Guild. The Showcase offered Tin the opportunity to collaborate with emerging writers and actors from diverse backgrounds, culminating in an event which saw the projects screened to key industry players in Australia. Radical Honesty has since gone on to play at several film festivals, including Peninsula Film Festival, Gold Coast Film Festival, Heart of Gold Film Festival and Short Com Film Festival in the UK.
Since 2017, Tin has worked as an Assistant Director on productions including Home and Away (Seven), Erotic Stories (SBS), Bump Season 4 (Stan), Heartbreak High Season 2 (Netflix), Last King Of The Cross Seasons 1 & 2 (Paramount+) and The Artful Dodger (Disney+) to name a few.
In 2022, Tin began working as a Director on Home and Away after completing a Director’s Attachment with director Ian Watson. With his extensive on-set experience, eye for authentic storytelling and passion for working with actors, Tin has worked to develop a wholistic and collaborative approach to navigating the filmmaking process.
In 2023, Tin received Screen Australia Generate and Screen NSW development funding for Brand-Aids, an 8 x 30 dramedy series delving into the hotbed topic of woke capitalism, set in the unpredictable world of advertising.
